Why do people believe in ancient prophecies if they had no proof to support them?

Back in ancient history they had NO science to tell if they add up or not. But yet by today's standards go against it with better accuracy due to a better understanding of how the world works. Yet many Fundamentalist go by that even if it violates the teachings of the Enlightenment.
