What exactly is the problem with drilling for oil on U.S. soil and off of U.S. coasts?

Yes, I've been wondering the same thing lately. It would be cheaper, easier, get more jobs for Americans, and we wouldn't be as dependent on unstable countries in the middle east. I really have no idea why we aren't doing it. Maybe the government just doesn't want to ruin our land by drilling into it.
