How to clean my boots?

I bought a pair of boots, I'm not sure what you would call the material but it resembles fabric and is really soft. Not exactly suede but something close to it. Anyways I wore them in the rain and they got really muddy. As soon as I got home I wiped the mud off and tried to clean them but they're stained- it's been a few days and the color of where the mud was is different than the color of the rest of the shoe! Are they ruined or is there any way to fix my boots? Any feedback would really help!
